* Review - King Of Subs*
by Nscafe Unleaded
19/11/97
So there I was, wondering what to have for breakfast. First, I needed some money, so I
wandered over to the local 'Sev and picked up acouple of bucks. Upon searching the Sub
shelf, I found none of my usual Insta-Subs.
Enter Albtera King of Subs. It's located on 52nd St and Temple Dr. N.E., the one with the
Turbo. Inside you see some nice fast food type tables. Behind the counter are two
very lovely women who take orders and make your food while you wait. While title
says Subs, you can have various other types of Fast Food also. I dined on what they call
``Meatball Mountain''. Not a bad name for a Meatball sub that has the ability to
fill a Cityworker after a <snicker> Long Hard day. Back to the Meatball sub, I
ordered the 12" version. Which consisted of 12 meatballs on 2 6" buns, with some
meat sauce and some spices. Trust me, it is a feast. Pricing is a little more expensive
then most other sub places. Then again, your also getting more then twice the meat per
sub. All the buns are toasted just a wee bit to add to the sub. I like toasted things, so
sue me. <smile>
There was a review of this place last winter sometime done in the Herald. Needless
to say it was a stunning review of what basically is a VERY well done fast food place. CP
Rail also likes this small time company for it's ability to have Fresh<??> Montreal
Smoked meat. Alot of the families who moved here from Montreal really enjoyed the treat of
have well done Montreal Smoked meat in Calgary. Then again, having CP rail pay for it
probably didn't hurt any either. In anycase, if you have a hankerin' for some Subs, and
your in the NE, go here.
* Review - Lost Highway *
By Nscafe Unleaded
Nov. 13/97
Ok, I just finished watching Lost Highway. My first reaction to it is "It's
Fucked." And, well. It _IS_ fucked. The plot line is VERY circular like Pulp Fiction
and Resivoir Dogs. The changing between actors and charaters is quite... distrubing. The
film on video is in wide screen format<you know the black line on top and on
bottem>. Funny thing is tho it doesn't detract from the film. Infact it adds to the
mood the movie's atmosphere. Mister Eddy, a mafia type guy has this... problem with
drivers who tailgate. Trying to discribe it would not do it justice. So just watch the
darn thing.
One of the MANY surpises in the film is that Marilyn Manson and Twiggy Ramierz do cameo's
as porno stars. Also, I HIGHLY recommend getting the soundtrack. 23 tracks straight from
the movie. There are two songs that appear in the movie but not on the soundtrack. Oh yea,
the soundtrack is produced by Trent Reznor. For those of you who like challanges, listen
for the Perfect Drug by Nine Inch Nails in the movie. It's tough to find. Heck, mail me
you answers and who ever gives me the correct answer first. Will get one of the
HIGHLY Limited Kawphy.News.BBS.Calgary T-shirts <when they're made up>.
* Revieaux - Metallica's Reload *
By Reality
November, 1997
As you have all been bludgened to death by, the newest Metallica album has been released,
it's title, Re-Load. Upon looking at it, many similarities in the cd case and the design
of the cd itself, plus the book jacket prove to be just another Load, something I believe
Metallica wanted to avoid, but obtained anyway. But, despite the oblivious similarities,
Metallica made the changes seemingly where it counts, in the music.
Upon hearing the album, the first thing I managed to notice was that some of the songs
seemed to be in corellation to Load, similar styles, guitar rifs, etc, but they majority
of the whole is somewhat darker, heavier, and I personally found less tracks that I wanted
to skip over because they were'nt bassy enough <Hero Of The Day, Mama Said> or fast
enough <The Outlaw Torn, Thorn Within, Bleeding Me, The House That Jack Built>.
The whole of this album, in my opinion, is what they rumored to be doing, a step backwards
in their music, attempting to regain what they were producing way back when they had the
late great Cliff Burton, Fast paced, heavy, loud, abrasive, Metalli-songs. In fact, it's
so much like that, only one song resembles a light acoustic, and even that's done very
well enough it's not worth skipping.
So all in all, I give this cd 4« Diggies out of a possible 5, and I recommend that all
fans of this form of music, at least give it a listen through. But, as always, that's just
one man's opinion, not yours.
* Don't you just hate it? *

You've just made it to the C-train station, you're hustling your butt down the escalator
and then the inevitable happens... the train leaves without you. And you know that driver
is sitting in their booth laughing at the look on your face as they pull away.
I don't think it's a matter of being late all the time, because even when you are early,
nothing ever waits for you. Sure, you can be right on time and they'll see you coming and
take off without you anyways.
People wonder why I get so frustrated at things like this. Think about this for a moment.
Wouldn't you become frustrated if the world never waited, even just a millisecond, for you
to catch up? I'm telling you, that for me, it gets very frustrating when you try to get
caught up and catch your breath at the same time while the whole world just keeps moving
on without you, taking a look back every now and then to get a good laugh out of watching
you fall behind.
Just once, I'd like to stop and look defiantly forward at the world, and flip them the
bird and go on at my own pace.
* Newbies - Rant *
By Soulscode
Novemeber 1997
Newbies, newbies, newbies... TOO MANY FUCKING NEWBIES!! Did'ja ever wish that there were
no newbies? Ever wonder how these people ever made it though the evolutionary intelligence
filter? You know, that one that arranges the things lacking intelligence to be lower life
forms? So does that make newbies lower life forms? I think so. If you've been around for a
while, you'll know what I'm talking about. Unless you have oodles of patience, (which I
really don't) you'd probably be wondering the same things I am. Well, first of all, what
the hell is a newbie? If you have to ask this question then you are a newbie and please
take offence to the rest of this article. Newbies are the new users of modem land, the
stupid ones that ask too many quesitons, and expect that everyone will want to talk to
them all at once. What happens when they don't get what they expect? They get rude and
obnocious (not that aren't already for being newbies).
I was online Chromehenge the other day and ran into one such idiot. His alias was Obi Wan,
and was he ever acting like a newbie. Now as much as I hate to quote one friend of mine,
but I have to, he was a 16yr old brat who got a modem for xmas. Jezzus H. Christ people,
who was the moron who gave this kid a modem? I mean, yea, we were all newbies at one point
or another, but still, were we that bad? I think it's a sign of the times. Stupid newbies,
stupid kids these days. I've been around for like.. 5 years now, I don't think I was that
bad when i first started geeking, and I even started on Octapode(yea I know, it's a sin to
admit that but hey, it's the truth), and that is the apitome of annoying newbies. It used
to be that all the annoying newbies were on 'Pode, now they seem to be all over the place.
Damnit, it's the newbies that are driving off all the good users of the old days. Anyways,
back to this newbie, Obi Wan.
He was askin' questions, now normally that's not a problem, but when he asks them over and
over again it gets annoying. Then the yutz starts annoying the users, hittin' on friends
of mine. Once again, normally not a big deal, but when I get paged by this friend askin'
for help, THAT is one of my biggest pet peves. Now why you ask am I usein' this yutz's
alias on here? Cause maybe I'll get him to realize his blunder and maybe he'll either
reform or get outta modem land. Anyways... I'm done my rant now. Not that I feel any
better about this. There will always be newbies around, but is it too much to hope that
maybe they will gain a few IQ points before they logon to the BBS scene?
* Where have all the 386's gone? - Babble *
By Soulscode - [email protected]
November 1997
Technology, wow, what fun. Have you tried to keep up with current technology these days?
It's changing faster than superman. Just a couple of years ago a 486 was a midline
computer that people thought would take the world by storm. Look what we have now,
Pentium, Pentium II, K6. What gives, and some of the speeds? 233, 300, 350Mhz? What
happened to the old 33Mhz of not too long ago? I won't pretend to know all of the new
technology that's out there, but I do try and stay on top of things. The newest stuff you
got now a days for processors at least is the Intel Pentium II, a new design that uses a
slot to connect it to the system in stead of the old pin design.
In my bias' opinion Intel is just trying to corner the market, or at least the high end
market to which the Pentium is directed right now. I can't say for sure, but hey... this
is Intel we're talking about.
The AMD K6 is an alternate processor for those who don't want to jump on the Intel
bandwagon, it's a cheaper and slightly slower processor, but only in respect to the FPU
calculations due to the lack of FPU power the K6 posesses compared to the Intel
processors.
Still on the processor kick, another alternate processor is the Cyrix/IBM 6x86MX/M2
processor. Once again, cheap but slow, this processor is actually targeted for the sub
$1000 PC market, but who knows it's lower price may put it in the running with Intel or
AMD.
As for motherboards these days, once again we're talking Intel for the most part. Current
chipsets are about 99% Intel, including the 430TX and the 440LX chipsets. Motherboard
manufacturers are as varied as keys on a keyboard. Even Intel makes motherboards, but
there is lots of competition in this market, far too much for me to go into detail on.
Moving on, away from Intel(thank goddess) I'll goto video cards. Some of the major
maunfacturers include ATI, Diamond Multi-Media, and Matrox Graphics. There are also a few
not so major manufacturers such as S3 and Cirrus Logic. The major manufacturers make some
of the fastest cards on the market today. ATI's All-In-Wonder card does(as you may have
figured) lot of stuff, from video capture to video transfer to a VCR among other neat
stuff. Diamond makes one of the fastest PCI Video cards on the market(at least in my and
others opinions) this being the Diamond Viper V330. Others go for the Matrox Bandwagon(I
myself am I this bandwagon) and like the Millennium II or the Mystique 220. I'll give the
Viper this, it is a faster card, but the price diff between it and the Matrox products is
enough for me to go Matrox. As for the other video card makers, it's more that they make
chipsets for video cards. Good examples are the Virge 3D chipset from S3, which is a VERY
common one as S3 is THE biggest maker of video chipsets. Or if you want to go Cirrus
Logic(not much diff than the S3) you can go CL5446 which is a good basic 2D with MPEG
chipset. I could go on a lil' more here but then I'd get more technical and possibly lose
people... 8).
Memory these days isn't dependent on maufacturer, more like what your motherboard can
handle. Most boards now a days can take SDRAM, which is currently the fastest on the
market. You can also go for ECC, EDO and FastPage memory. I won't bother to go into detail
on those other ones, but if you want more info mail me and I'll dig up a little more and
put in a seperate article in another issue for all you knowledge hungry techies out there.
SDRAM has an average access time of 10ns(that nanoseconds for those who aren't up on their
nomenclature). Only the newest Pentium II motherboards will handle the SDRAM as the old
chipset was originally designed for Pentium Pro before SDRAM was on the market. As for
Pentium Motherboards, only the 430VX and the 430TX chipsets. The 430VX is the older of the
2, and as a result is slower, and doesn't fully support the extra processes of MMX on the
newest processors. The 430TX chipset as all the bells and whistles for Pentium
motherboards, SDRAM, USB, IrDA etc.
There's a basic overview of the current technologies going into today's systems, there is
a mirad of other possibilities if you want go further into the peripherals market, stuff
like sound cards, add-in cards, modems and the like. Maybe I'll go over that stuff in
another article later. Any questions or comments please feel free to mail me, or email me
at the above addresses. Like I said, I don't claim to know everything so don't kill me if
I happen to be wrong on here... 8)
* Rant - Windows NT4.0 *
By Nscafe Unleaded
November 1997
Windows. What can you say about Microsoft's Window's that hasn't been said before?
Honestly, I don't know. What I know however, is that WinNT4.0 is one of the most stable
Microsoft operating systems on the market today, save perhaps MS-DOS 6.22. From what I've
encountered with NT, the easiest way to crash it, is by loading software that wants to
choose other IRQ's then the ones that NT has already specified. Adding new hardware. The
easiest way to add new hardware to NT is, turn off your machine, add the new hardware, and
re-install NT. Now for some the better features of NT. Networking, and NTFS. Networking is
VERY easy with NT. Plug in your Netcard, goto Network neigbourhood, add an IP addressing,
and your set. Simple enough?
Onto security. Wow, one of the better features of NT is the NTFS<NTFileSystem>.
Which allows you to set permissions on induhvidual files and directories. If your account
doesn't let you use a certian file, there's <as far as I know> no way for you to use
that file. Even programs that need that file will stop running. I find this to be a very
effective way of doing things. Creating accounts in NT is a bit harder then in 95. All
passwords come up at 10 astrix's no matter the original length of your password. Auditing
account from an Admin stand point is VERY easy. Also, you can have your NT box on the
network or locally. The way to do this is very easy. At the logon part where you put your
name, just select a different domain. No biggie. The way I see it, NT4.0 is making a VERY
large dent the Networking world. Novell just came out with a new version, I have yet to
see it in comparison. Hype is just hype afterall.
Oh yea, another recommentation. GET FAMILIAR WITH NT if you have anopprotunity. TAKE IT.
There's quite a shortage of NT people. Even if you don't have the certification for NT,
but you have some expirence you can be in demand.
* Review - Wired Magazine *
By Nscafe Unleaded
Novemeber 1997
What is Wired? Well, it is a computer Hype magazine that has ALOT of advertising. I've
seen issues from Net censorship, to Demos, to the top people in Hollywood who are pushing
the edge in Highend Tech. On top of VERY well done articles, they have some regular
features. Like letters to the editor, top ten lists that sorta thing. Now that the
overview is done. Let's get on to what I think of this publication.
Wired is a magazine the appeals to those Geeks who want to be in the know without Game
reviews or Equipment stats on every page or so. It offers an insightful look at how some
smaller companies look at the Computer industry, and how they manage to control<or
succeed> in their respective goals. The writers seem to be young, and have a fairly
open mind on a vast selection of topics. I was watching some TV show awhile ago about the
Wired Dwelling. It's just that, a Wired Dwelling. X number writers cramed into a New York
style Flat, that have a Chef come in and make lunchs for people. Sounds like fun? Well, it
looked like fun... I'm sure I saw more then one Koosh<tm> ball fly across the
Camra's lense. As of November they are on issue 11 and in they're fifth volume. The
issue's are cataloged as such 1.0 through 5.11. You get the idea. Each issue is brightly
coloured and as I said earlier, full of advertisements. One of the better adverts that is
a regular feature are the Absolut Vodka ones. Which incidently I have started to collect
with a passion. Here another subtle hint, if anyone wants to pick me up the Absolut Vodka
Art book from Chapters... feel free. You'll even get mentioned in here <I _LOVE_ being
an Editor>.
One more thing before this review is done. Well, two more things. Wired is a bit pricey,
but then again which computer mag isn't? It runs about 5.95$ Canadian. Wired is alos one
most inspirations for Kawphy.News.BBS.Calgary. Should I mention some of Wired's other
interests <looks at Cat>
``meow''
I'll take that as a yes. Well, Wired also founded www.wired.com, www.hotmail.com,
www.hotbot.com, and www.news.com. So they are _VERY_ aware of what the Net community is
like. With a name like Wired, you'd have to be, I guess.
