Chromehenge
has had a facelift. For those of you who don't know what
Chromehenge is, let
me explain. Chomehenge is one of the best message BBS's
in Calgary. However
unlike most BBS's in Calgary it was run off of a
Macintosh. Running
off of a Macintosh has quite a number of problems, first
and foremost is software.
There isn't alot of BBS support packages out there
for a Macintosh(I
just KNOW I'm going to get flamed for that one). But one
of the <ahem> better
packages is Hermes, or Herpes for those who know and
love it. The only
REAL problem with Hermes is that is crashes, alot. I would
have included a review
of the `NEW' Chromehenge, But it wasn't ready by the
time of this publication.
*Vampire: The Masquerade*

There's a RPG
out there that's worth looking at. It's called Vampire: The
Masquerade. Now some
of you are going `geee, another roll playing game,
better get out my
shoebox full of dice.' Well, V:TM isn't your typical game,
it's more of a Role
playing game as oppesed to a Roll playing game. Dice
aren't used too much,
and when they are used it's only 2d8(two dice eight
sided), and that's
only for combat, and making minor rolls. For the most
part it's like a play.
There's a storyteller(director) and
charaters(actors),
but instead of a script it's improv based on different
situations.
Vampire:TM
is set in the world of darkness, a universe created by Mark
Rein-Hagen. This universe
is earth, more or less. Basicly earth in a
Gothic-Punk style.
Buildings are tall, and menacing. People are depressed,
poverty is WAAAAY
up, and faceless corporations rule buisness(for the most
part). In this universe
there are Vampires, Werewolfs, Mages, Wraiths, and
Changlings. Not surpising,
there are five main books, and each of these
books have sublaments.
For a good
feel of what Vampire:TM is about, watch Kindred: The Embrace,
wednesdays at ten
o'clock on FOX.

Attention!
This article is for those of you users out there who are in
need of a REAL BBS.
Now I know
that everyone's idea of a cool BBS differs, and this my
opinion. Dischordia
is what can best be described as a `Catch-All' BBS. It
catchs your attention
with awsome ANSI's, and cool message bases. Next comes
the sense of community
that the users share with one another on the Dementia
Wall<grin>. And
last but not least is the file areas<once you find them>.
The files that Dischordia
holds are of mostly a unique nature<Occult,
Vampires, Anarchy,
Pretty Screen Thingys>, and a few of the `Tradional'
areas.
Dischordia
is run by Astrocreep, and Interpid, and is being co-operated by
Timber. Meets are
held Mondays and Thursdays at Mikes Pizza on 12th ave and
8th street.

A local band
by the name of 3D Electric Jesus has stormed my cd player.
Warning these guys
are VERY addictive and extremly good. Look for them at
your local Music store
with the album Anonymous.
I first had
a chance to listen to them while they were opening up for
April Wine at the
Back Alley in January(I Think). I remember thinking to
myself `Gee, these
guys are good. I wonder if they have a anything that I
can listen to at home.'
Sure enough, they did. I strongly recommend this
band if you like hard
rock. You can see them atthe BackAlley and other night
clubs around town.
Look for them!
*Review - Meets and
Treats*

Sunday May 19,
1996 Vol. 1 No. 2
There are many
delightful things you could say about meeting your fellow
geekers... But do
we know any of them? Sorry to say it but we don't.
Yes I have
been to several different BBS meets. The one I prefer to go to
is for a BBS that
no longer exists, Kitiara's Revenge. So why do we keep
having them? Because
the meet has evolved from meeting at a specific place
on specific days to
meeting for whatever and whenever with those whom you
have really gotten
to know.
Then there
are the Main BBS meets. I have been to one: Nite Hawk. And well
I must say I was pretty
disappointed with the unfriendliness of the Users.
Maybe it was because
they were mostly children and thus lacked the proper
respect and know how
of picking out other possible geeks. These kind of
meets I suggest you
avoid unless getting a subscription for one of their
features that you
actually need and can use. Otherwise STAY AWAY at ALL COSTS!
One way of
telling if you have been to a good meet is if you have never
been on their system
and the users are very friendly to you, and they will
remember you with
a few simple reminders of which person you were, when and
if you ever get online
to their system. Such was the case when I was finally
validated at Chromehenge.
Nowadays BBS's
are combining meets, making it easier for people to get to
them. And since most
Geekers out there geek at two or more BBS's at a time
with a close net of
friendly geeks, these make for good meeting places. Such
is the case with Chromehenge
and Dischordia, since both these BBS's share a
large number of their
users and you are able to pay both at one time.
Now nearing
the end I feel I must mention one of the most known and
reputable BBS's out
there: Octapode. In the early days of my geekdom, I was
told to avoid this
system. Did I listen? No. Because I believe it is good to
be found in more than
one place and since my Geekhome is gone, I have been
able to find several
old geekfiends there. But they still continue to tell
me never to go to
a Pode Meet. This I do not understand. For there are
several users whom
I wouldn't mind getting to know. Why haven't I gone to
one of their meets?
Because Denny's is not a good place to have a meet. Why?
Because the COFFEE
SUCKS, sure it's free refills, but that's cause it's so
old and thick it won't
drain down the sink anymore. But for those who don't
drink coffee they
have free refills on Pop. But who wants to drink watered
Pop. You say "no ice"
and they give you twice as much as they would
normally. Not to mention
the Staff is not very friendly with the likes of
geeks. It seems that
a prerequisite of working as a Server at Denny's is the
ability to sniff out
and snub all possible geeks, even when they have
copious amounts cash
on them.
So what makes
a good meet? Friendly Users or at least ones that will
introduce themselves
to you at least once. A place with a friendly
atmosphere, plenty
of coffee and/or pop(or any other good caffeine
substitute), and if
you like French Fries as much as I do, they have to make
Good Fries. And above
all: Meets at Denny's are not favorable, if you are
looking for a 24 Hour
place, why not check out Husky House or one of the
various 24 hour truck
stops around town, since they obviously don't mind
dubious characters
hanging around, besides how much trouble can geeks really
cause at meet? <evil
grin>.
