*INTERVIEW - MAX HEADROOM*
 By Nscafe Unleaded
 Kawphy.News.BBS.Calgary
 Thursday, August 22, 1996 Vol 1. No. 4

A name most people will recognize is Max Headroom. He is remembered for his
lovable roll in a movie of the same name. Nevermind, the first line. It's
not the same computer generated block head. Instead, this interview is with
the user Max Headroom. Questions about his past in BBS's, and his future.
What the BBS scene in calgary is like, and what music he likes. So, without
further delay. Here's the interview.

Nscafe Unleaded: Heya...

Max Headroom: Let'r rip :)

Nscafe Unleaded: K, well, how long have you been modeming?

Max Headroom grabs a chair and sits comfortably.

® Nscafe Unleaded assumes a waiting reporter stance. ¯

Max Headroom: About 3 or 4 years...

Nscafe Unleaded: Ok... and how did you get started? by a friend, teacher.
                 Magazine...

Max Headroom: By a friend who knew a bit about modems. I liked the idea of
using my computer to connect with other computers and tried a
bunch of phone numbers I found from an old list.

Nscafe Unleaded: How did you get started with Quantum?

Max Headroom: I was a regular on Nucleus where I ran into Carl (Shadowmage).
He was talking about how he was starting up a new board. It
looked like he knew a bit about computers and I asked him if he
wanted any help. We worked from there on :)

Nscafe Unleaded: Have you been a SysOp, or SubOp on any other BBS since?

Max Headroom: Yup. After Quantum, I became a CoSysop on Ion Trail for quite a
long time when The Original SysOp was running it. After that,
I was a staff member and programmer on Foundation/Ewenique
Creations for about half a year. After that, I returned to Ion
Trail once again as a CoSysop with Bob the Janitor and Data
Chan as the owners. From there on, if Ion Trail shuts down,
it's my hope I can continue to offer my time to other boards :)

Nscafe Unleaded: Now, where was I going with this line of questioning. Oh yes,
where were you on the night of the third??

Max Headroom: Ummm...ummmm.... at home.... yea, on the internet..... I heard
someone drive off with my car and saw my jacket and cap were
              stolen...

Nscafe Unleaded: <shakes head> Ok... your free to go.

Max Headroom: :)

Nscafe Unleaded: No, that wasn't it. RRR... Ok, I think I've got it now.
                 <sigh>

Nscafe Unleaded: So right now, your a CoSysop at Ion trail....

Max Headroom: Yup... basically doing the things I've always been doing
(general administration, handling user requests, ensuring the
software is working properly, and various techie-sorta things
              too:) )

Nscafe Unleaded: And what do you think of the modeming scene in calgary? Is
it alive in well? Does it need more policing?

Max Headroom: Depends on where you go... The modem scene is a lot like the
world. Some places, a high degree of policing is desirable, in
others, it's undesirable and unwanted. If a crowd is quite
young on a system, There should be an eye kept out to ensure
nothing too offensive or dangerous happens, er... in some areas,
              it's undesirable and unneeded.

Nscafe Unleaded: Do you see a bright future for Single line BBS's? Or for
that fact, multi-line ones? Do you see the Internet a threat
                 to such systems?

Max Headroom: The future of single-line boards and multi-line boards will
probably depend on two things in the future:
                 a) The owner/sysop's ability to maintain a board, and
                 b) connectivity to the internet.
If you don't have either in the future, it's going to be very
difficult to keep a board online.

Nscafe Unleaded: Well, enough about Modems for a sec. What type of music do
                 you like? Do you have a job/career <besides Oping>?

Max Headroom: I enjoy mainly Dance, Techno, and Gothic (i.e. Gregorian Chant
and some Enigma). As for a job? I'm hunting around for almost
any job. A career? I wish :) Someday maybe something in system
administration/design, or programming. Oping for multi-line
boards isn't really a career or maybe even a job. It's strictly
volunteer work, hardly any multi-line board in Calgary has any
              paid "staff" on it.

Nscafe Unleaded: What is your idea of a `Utopian' BBS?

Max Headroom: A board where the SysOp is cool with whatever the users do, and
where the users are cool with whatever the SysOp does, and
enough incoming being generated to let the board keep ahead of
competition and provide the SysOp with a home (even if it's a
small apartment. If this can be done without harm, you'd have
the perfect (or utopian) board :). The closer people are to
being perfect (or just cool with everything), the easier it
would be to put a utopian board together :)

Nscafe Unleaded: <smile> I think we both know that's a far dream for now...
Well, thanx for your time. Time to cut/paste this into a
                 great start of another issue.

Max Headroom: Anytime :)

Terminal Programs, what makes them different? For the most part _ALL_ term
programs dial out, upload/download, and have macro's. Each term program is
unique in it's `Quick-Keys' though. Still others don't have a `Edit'
function (Telix). Some offer better graphics (RIP), and some are just plain
silly (Roboterm). I want to know what makes one terminal program better then
another!? Is it the colors? Is it the way it's setup? It's driving me nuts.
I personally use Telemate(Which rocks BTW), most people I know use Telemate.
Some, however use Terminate, or worst yet, Telix. I want to know what YOU
use. Mail me at [email protected], or whatever BBS you dl'd this from.

Nscafe Unleaded and the Queen of Nowhere, were married on Thursday August
29th of this Year, 1996. The ceremony was performed by His Holyness, Lord
Midnight from The Church of Virtual Intercourse, and though the Holy Tribble
<all hail tribble> was not able to attend, SpaceLady stood in place of the
Holy Tribble, acting as the Book. Trigger stood as Nscafe's Best Man, and
Amethyst Dragon stood by Queenie's side as her Best Woman.
At the end of the ceremony, the couple petted the Book (SpaceLady), and
Lord Midnight kissed the Book, (SpaceLady). It was a Gay Fete had by all
those who witnessed the affair. It is not known when the Happy Couple will
be leaving for their Honeymoon, but I am sure everyone wishes them a happy
fun filled time to wherever they choose to go. Happy Consummation Nscafe and
Queenie! ;)

Lamers. Why do you insist on being annoying? Do think it's cool? Do think
that it show intelligence? Well, it doesn't make you cool, nor intelligent.
Why? because people laugh at you. You may be doing something neat, but
typing like a fool, makes you look dumb. So you got a modem for christmas,
how nice for you. You saw that you could do high ASCii, also how nice for
you. What isn't so nice for you, is the fact that your pests. Pests that
need to be fumigated. Now, you may be smart, and you may Hack, or phreak,
but please, no PLEASE. Type like a human, not like a monkey. It's people
like you, who need Windows '95. Why? Because apparently you don't know how to
use your keyboard.

Now I've been around the modem scene for a little bit. And in my time as a
geek, I've noticed various groups of people trying to look better then
others. Some act differently, some type differently, some just are
different. I have a really problem with people who Åyp3 Àik3 Åh³s. Why?
Because it's annoying to read, and it's usually typed with the line `Fuck
you man, you don't know shit." Face it, people sometimes know more then you
do. It's life. Now I know your shattered ego may not accept this yet, but
soon after the 100th page/whisper/Email bomb, you may clue in. Everyone
needs a hobby, make your breathing, it helps the brain.

*MindWorks - Review*

I recently had a chance to visit Mindworks Entertainment Centers. What is
Mindworks some might ask. Well boys and girls, it's a place where you can
sit down, pay a fee, and play the latest in Networked games! You can also
pay a fee and Role-play to your hearts content. You may say `I only game at
night.' Well, that's ok, they open at 10 am, and close whenever the last
person leaves. Where is this mystical place located? At unit #227 7004
Macleod Tr. S.E.

They have two rooms and six computers/room, plus a main area where you can
role-play. They sell chocolate bars, pop, role-playing books, and cd-rom
games. You have your choice of a Thrustmaster, a mouse, or a keyboard to
play your favorite game.

A brief history, well, more story. A long time ago, in a land called
Calgary, a man had a dream. His name was Guy. His dream was to create a
store where people could Beat each other senseless in computer games. This
store would run into difficulties, mainly money. Guy did not give up
however, he struggled, and plotted, and saved. Then one day his store
opened. MindWorks Entertainment Center opened it's doors. People
flocked<kinda> to it. They phrase `If you build it, they will come.' comes
to mind. As word spread of the holy place, people can, investors came, and
new shop shall be opening in Ottawa around december.

So go to Mindworks, say hello to Guy. Play games for a bit. Oh, there's a
coupon for half hour free in the Gauntlet this month.
